Cross-colleges Reading Group: Reading East Asian Design (READ)
There have been remarkable design activities in East Asia (Mainland China, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan) and diaspora communities worldwide, but design histories have not been written and design itself has not been critically studied. This is a reading group which will provide an opportunity to read essays on some aspects of modern and contemporary design in East Asia and it will discuss critical issues and methodologies specific to this region. This group will be led by Dr Yuko Kikuchi (Reader, TrAIN and CCW Graduate School) and Hiroki Yamamoto (PhD candidate, TrAIN). Anybody at MA/PhD level who has some knowledge and interest in East Asia and an adequate level of reading ability is welcome, as are members of staff. We also welcome students with East Asian backgrounds who wish to develop critical reading skills in English, through this group. The only requirement is to read the assigned article before coming to the session, in order to participate in the group discussion.
